In a matter of seconds, Hiroshi Kitamura can envisage the most relevant hairstyle that expresses customers’ attractiveness when he views the shape of their heads, and the quality and stream of their hair. Stepping around the customer, almost as if dancing, he clips hair with the speedy rhythmical sniping of his scissors. He holds the hair with his left hand, releases it, and clips it as it falls into place, while his decades of experience guide the scissors at just the right angle.
In 1972, he encountered Vidal Sassoon himself, the charismatic hairdresser, and commenced an apprenticeship under his supervision. Hiroshi was struck by Sassoon’s view that each individual should have unique hairstyle rather than following a standard model. Mesmerized by the new concept, the young man from Japan continued to exert himself, even when it meant depriving himself of sleep.
Eventually, Hiroshi was able to establish his own unique style of cutting. This style is the fusion between the dynamic design learned from Sassoon and his own fastidiousness with details.
In 1977, he was chosen as one of the best eight hairdressers among 1,000 employees at the Vidal Sassoon salons and was regularly involved in Sassoon’s hair shows.
Thirty-five years have passed since opening his own salon, which has attracted the attention of hairdressers around the world and has become a salon that symbolizes Beverly Hills. Hiroshi enthusiastically said, “By using a caring heart, hairdressers can multiply their customers’ radiant beauty many times. Using scissors and a caring heart is closer to multiplication than to addition and expands the possibility of beauty.”
